Colin Wright is an author, international speaker, and full-time traveler. He’s written a few dozen books, both fiction and nonfiction, hosts theLet’s Know Things podcast, and produces a show called Consider This. He’s scary-good at Tetris, above-average with a yo-yo, and a fairly mediocre (but enthusiastic) cook.

Colin shares…”A brand is an idea”
“It’s amazing how often we misinterpret ‘branding’ as simply shouting words and projecting imagery at people. A brand is an idea — a philosophy. It’s your story and what makes you different from everyone else. It’s your reason for being, doing, and persisting.

Brand elements, like logos and websites and written copy can all help you express these things, but if you don’t have a core — if you’re all shell, no density — you’re building something incredibly fragile. You’re telling a story with flat characters and no plot. You’re also forced to compete directly with every other person in the world with a similar idea or offering.

By being yourself, however, and having a unique point of view, you ensure that you are your only real competition. If you express this well, your perspective becomes an asset, and your key metrics shift. You’re able to not just accomplish something, but to accomplish it in a philosophically-aligned manner. This tends to be a lot more effective, but it also allows you to gleefully go to work each day, and smile at yourself in the mirror each morning.”

“A key issue that I think we’re dealing with now, and will continue to struggle with for the foreseeable future, is how to filter the signal from the noise.
That is: as we become more skilled at amplifying our voices, adding more oomph to more messages than ever before, how do we ensure we can glean the information we want to acquire, while also exposing ourselves to a diverse collection of perspectives? How do we puncture filter bubbles, while also enabling fast and accurate acquisition of vital facts and basic knowledge? I’ve seen a lot of opinions and potential directions on this, but no silver bullets.”
